Newington High School Principal's Newsletter

Good afternoon,
Happy Friday AND Happy Mother's Day weekend! I am so excited to join seniors attending the senior prom tonight at the Aqua Turf.
Despite the rain, I know all our students will shine!
We had a great week of celebration. NHS honored our Teachers, ParaEducators, Tutors and substitutes all week with various messages, treats and a pizza lunch - thank you STUCO. We are so grateful to our staff for ALL they do - every single day!!!
Additionally, thank you to everyone who participated in Tigno week. (Special shout out to Mrs. Miller, Ms. Batista, Mrs. Narowski, Mrs. N. Riberio, Mrs. Francolino, Mrs. Freese, Mrs. A. Sunderland, and Ms. Sperrazza for their unbelievable planning and creativity). It was a true testament of our Family of Learners: an entire spirit week - my favorite songs were played (Congrats to Peyton Pulawski for winning a gift card for knowing the artists), kindness sticky notes filled a display case, a Tigno "then and now" display case, a full parade around the building (Thank you Unified Sports and everyone who made hundreds of posters), a rap song (Thank you Ms. A. Sunderland and M. Ofori, Jr), Tigno Trivia (Congrats to Mrs. Narowski's Advisory for winning the free breakfast), a notebook filled with hundreds of positive messages (designed by Corin Tate, Shelly Engelhard, and Nicholas Winiarski), a drum line performance, a 1986 cardboard cut out of me at a prom, a gratitude wall (Thank you Kalia Truong), an office filled with balloons, and a gorgeous canvas painting made by Corin Tate (pictured left). I can not say it enough - I LOVE my job and I am so forutnate to be surrounded by amazing staff, students, and community!
Here's this week's learning: students enjoy using Punnett Squares to determine traits; students prepared a character analysis of Pecola- the main character in "The Bluest Eye", our band and orchestra students displayed their talents in two outstanding performances; and parents participate in Spanish class for students' project interviews - Thank you!
Attendance - we are now in the home stretch - last half of quarter 4. Students and families should be mindful of our attendance policy and students are expected to be in school every day!

As we head into week two of AP Exams here is a summary of all the tips posted to the Parent/Student square group the week before AP Exams:
Tip #1: Getting prepared
Linked here is information about Fully & Hybrid AP Testing. You have also been invited via Google Calendar to your AP exam and its location.
Linked here is the exam schedule that was sent on April 8th to all students taking AP exams and their parents/guardians.
Please also check out the resources on the group page to see practice exams and more.
Tip #2: Things to complete:
1. Students need to run a system check on their school provided chromebook via the BlueBook Application to make sure it meets testing requirements (link here instructions).
2. Students need to use a school provided device for AP testing. If you never received a school provided device you can check one out in main school counseling the day before their first AP exam.
Tip #3: Important Reminder for Digital AP Exams
Remember, for digital AP Exams (fully digital and hybrid digital) on exam day, students need to sign in to Bluebook™ using their College Board student account information to access their digital AP Exam. Saving their password on their testing device won’t work.
You should locate your CollegeBoard student account information and sign in to Bluebook before exam day; to ensure you can sign in to Bluebook will help avoid delays on exam day.
Your CollegeBoard Login information should be written down on a piece of paper and brought with you to each AP TEST. Again SAVING YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD ON YOUR CHROMEBOOK WILL NOT WORK!!
|
Tip #4: Supplies needed:
1. Photo ID Required: A valid form of identification is required (Student ID, Drivers License or a State issued photo ID, or Passport)
2. #2 Pencils
3. Black or Blue Pens
5. Your CollegeBoard Login information written down on a piece of paper, not just saved on your chromebook. Saved passwords and usernames on your chromebook WILL NOT work in BlueBook.
6. FULLY CHARGED School Provided Chromebook & Charger- don't forget to plug it in the night before your AP exam. If you do not have a school provided Chromebook you can check one out in main school counseling the night before.
Tip #5: Take a deep breath- YOU GOT THIS!!
Eat a good meal and get a good night's rest the day before your AP Exam(s) and eat a good breakfast.
Other reminders:
- If your test is scheduled for an afternoon session (12:00-4:00), please bring lunch and eat before the test
- Inform your teachers and coaches that you will be taking an AP Exam(s).
- You are expected to follow through with your academic responsibilities. You are esponsible for contacting their teachers. OFFX will be entered for attendance.
- Park in the Lucy Welles Library lot.
- Contact Mr. Korn with questions. ([email protected])

11th Grade Parents/Guardians and Students,
As you may recall, on March 27th 11th grade students were given the opportunity to take the SAT as part of our school day. The scores of this important test will be officially released by the College Board on April 17th. Students will need a College Board account. The account should be in the student’s legal name and shared with parents to avoid problems when registering for future College Board tests.
To access student scores, go to https://studentscores.collegeboard.org/viewscore and log in if your student already has an account, or create an account if this is their first time. If your student previously created an account and does not remember their User ID or password, OR, if you have more than one account and need to merge accounts, please call the College Board student helpline at 866-433-7728. High school personnel do not have access to student accounts. Some student scores will be released later for conditions that require additional attention. Students will receive an email from the College Board as their scores are released.
When you access your student's score report, the first thing you will see is the total score, which is a combination of the Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing and the Math sections. College Board has partnered with Khan Academy to develop practice plans/tests that will focus on the skills that individual students need to work on.
Scores for 11th grade students that took the SATs on the make-up day (April 3rd) will be released on May 1st If you have any questions and/or concerns please reach out to your student’s school counselor.

SCHOOLINKS - New College and Career Platform!
We are very excited to introduce our new college and career readiness platform, SchooLinks! All of the SchooLinks features are designed with students in mind to help them become career, college, and life ready. This new platform will replace Naviance going forward.
SchooLinks allows students to:
- Take career interest, strength, and mindset assessments to learn more about student interests and what careers might be right for them.
- Complete research on colleges, careers, and more to help families have informed conversations with student’s future goals.
- Personalized dashboard for upcoming events as well as important reminders and to-dos for students.
- Compare college costs and explore expected financial aid, scholarships, and out of pocket expenses.
- Send supplemental college application materials (i.e. Teacher Recommendations, Transcripts).
Seniors (class of 2025) were introduced to SchooLinks during junior workshops and individual planning. We will introduce students to the many features and show students their next steps as families prepare for college applications this school year.
|
Seniors applying to college, what you can do now before the school year starts:
1. Submit the Parent/Guardian “NHS College & Scholarship Records Release” form through PowerSchool Parent Portal under “Forms (in the left menu).” In the PowerSchool Mobile App click More, then Forms, and then [NHS] College & Scholarship Records Release.
2.Complete your Personal Reflection on SchooLinks.
- On the SchooLinks home page, click on “To Do List” tab, on top of page, and then “Personal Reflection”
- Answer the questions completely and honestly - this is a major source of information for your counselor’s letter of recommendation
3. Update your resume (should be in Google Drive) and make sure you have shared it with your counselor. If you do not have a resume, create one using this template: https://bit.ly/NHSResume
All these steps need to be completed before the school counseling department can send out any college application supplemental materials (ex: transcripts and school counselor recommendation letter) for your student.
