Leveling Up Culturally Responsive and Engaging Pedagogy "With a Little Help from our Friends"

District Intended Outcome: That we maintain the high performance of students meeting and exceeding district standards/expectations, increase performance of students performing below district standards/expectations, and reduce the predictable performance gap between groups of students performing at or above standards/expectations and groups of students performing below standards/expectations.

Our Educators and Students are Doing Amazing Things!

Ruth Chaffee Student Earns First Place
Jina Yang, 3rd grade student at Ruth Chaffee, won first place in last Saturday's Chalk Walk at the Waterfall Festival this weekend! Her art teacher, Courtney Frazao, shared, "Jina is one outstanding artist, and it shows in and outside of art class. Mom explained that Jina was hesitant to put herself out there in a public art competition, but she acted with bravery and entered, and won!"

In addition to Jina, we had other Newington students participate in the Chalk Walk at Saturday's Waterfall Festival! Lulu Rodriguez, student at Anna Reynolds, was also a chalk artist! Bravo!
"Why I Want to Teach" Featuring NHS Students
The Teach CT Campaign: Why I Want To Teach has officially been published! Many of our NHS Educators Rising students and STUCO representatives were featured. I would like to extend a huge thank you for everyone's role in launching this important effort. Please check out the video here.

STUCO Visits Chaffee

NHS leaders from STUCO and the Educators Rising Club recently took part in a cross-district field trip to Ruth Chaffee Elementary School, where they engaged with 3rd and 4th grade emerging leaders. During the visit, students explored the qualities that define a great leader and learned what it’s like to be a high school student. Our young friends had the chance to ask plenty of thoughtful questions! It was a rewarding day spent giving back to the Ruth Chaffee Elementary School Community.

Thank you Mrs. Kristen Wild, Mrs. Erin Bonfoey & Ms. Elsa Batista for creating this opportunity for our students and to all of the teachers for welcoming NHS to your classrooms.

Durga Puja Festival

Over the weekend, NHS was the host site for the Durga Puja Festival. It is one of the most significant and grandest festivals in the Indian culture- encompassing religious, artistic, and social dimensions. The organizer, Dr. Sanjay Banerjee, invited me to attend so he could present a check in the amount of $1000 to the district.

It is important to note that NPS was one of the first districts to adopt Diwali (the next major Indian holiday) as a school holiday. Gov. Lamont just announced it is now a state holiday.

I enjoyed learning about the traditions and history of this holiday. The picture below shows the transformation of the NHS stage.
