Meaningful Volunteer Opportunities: Hospice & Assisted Living

Posted Date: 02/05/26 (12:22 PM)

Dear Students, Staff and Families,

I am thrilled to announce a new initiative focused on connecting passionate students with meaningful volunteer opportunities in healthcare, social work, and community service. In collaboration with Brighton Hospice and Civita Care Center, we are looking for dedicated individuals to provide companionship and lead activities for those in our community who need it most. This isn't just about gaining experience; it’s about the profound impact a single conversation or a shared activity can have on someone's life. I am honored to help facilitate these connections and can't wait to see the heart our students bring to this work.

"Throughout my career as a Physician Assistant, I have witnessed the quiet, profound loneliness that many seniors face every day. For some residents, the absence of family and friends leaves a void that only human connection can fill. These partnerships aren't just about service; they are about bridging that gap. I truly believe that by stepping into their world, you will find your own perspective shifted and your life changed for the better as you grow into your profession."

Why Participate? Beyond the personal fulfillment of helping others, these positions are excellent for students looking to build their resumes for college and scholarship applications. It demonstrates high levels of empathy, responsibility, and commitment.

Tips for Success: Volunteering in Senior Care

  • Be a Good Listener: Many residents have incredible stories to share. Sometimes, the most valuable thing you can do is simply give them your full attention.
  • Approach with Empathy: Remember that these facilities are the residents' homes. Always knock before entering a room and greet everyone with a warm smile.
  • Professionalism is Key: Dress according to the facility’s code (usually "business casual" or scrubs) and always arrive on time.
  • Respect Privacy (HIPAA): Never share personal or medical information about the people you meet. Maintaining their confidentiality is a top priority.
  • Ask for Guidance: If you aren’t sure how to handle a specific situation or conversation, don't hesitate to ask a staff member for help. They are there to support you!
I invite anyone interested in joining this initiative to contact me directly. I would be happy to discuss how these roles can align with your personal and professional goals.

Please Note: Due to the sensitive nature of these environments, some facilities may require a orientation, background check and age requirement (typically 16).

Warmest regards,
